IGNOU Signs MoU with IIT Bombay

Project Udaan, initiated by IGNOU and IIT Bombay, aims to make higher education accessible and multilingual

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have partnered strategically to unveil Project Udaan, a cutting-edge, AI-driven translation project that will revolutionize higher education in India and mark a major step toward inclusive and multilingual education.

At IGNOU’s headquarters, the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, formally establishing their partnership. In keeping with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes equitable and multilingual learning, the partnership aims to remove linguistic barriers in higher education.

With the help of artificial intelligence, Project Udaan can translate technical and scholarly materials into a number of Indian languages while maintaining the original formatting and layout. To guarantee accuracy and readability in translations, the platform integrates Optical Character Recognition (OCR), specialized glossaries, and human-in-the-loop feedback.

The initiative’s importance was underlined by its driving force, Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan of IIT Bombay. He stated at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding that “Project Udaan is tailored to India’s linguistic diversity and aims to make education accessible to all, irrespective of language barriers.”

The translation of IGNOU’s extensive course materials into regional languages is anticipated to have a significant impact, particularly for students from non-English speaking backgrounds and those residing in rural areas, as IGNOU is one of the biggest open universities in the world.

The project is also in line with the larger national objectives of the Bharat Bhasha and Digital India programs, which emphasize inclusive AI development and the use of Indian languages in digital education.

The initiative was praised as a revolutionary step towards democratizing education by senior officials from IGNOU and IIT Bombay. They pointed out that IGNOU’s reach and IIT Bombay’s technological know-how could help close language-based learning gaps.

Project Udaan hopes to empower millions of students and guarantee that language is no longer a barrier to high-quality education by providing educational materials in several Indian languages.

In addition to being a technological breakthrough, this partnership demonstrates a dedication to inclusion, equity, and innovative teaching in the digital era.
